NATIONAL BLACK HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY

February 05, 2018

I Am My Brother’s and Sister’s Keeper

Naples, Fla. — National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is observed each year on February 7 to increase education, testing, community involvement, and treatment among black communities. The Florida Department of Health in Collier County (DOH-Collier) is responding to the impact of HIV in our Black community by offering free testing events in February. All testing sites will be offering free, rapid HIV testing with same day results.  DOH-Collier encourages everyone to get tested at least once for HIV.

Blacks/African Americans continue to have the highest numbers of HIV compared to other races and ethnicities. In 2015, the CDC reported that African Americans accounted for 45% of new HIV diagnoses while only representing about 12% of the US population.  In Collier County, 41% of men, women, and children who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS are Black.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a nationwide mobilization effort designed to encourage Black Americans across the US to get educated, get tested, get treated, and get involved with HIV/AIDS, as it continues to devastate Black communities.
