NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY

June 11, 2018

Free HIV Testing Events in Collier County

June 27th marks the annual observance of National HIV Testing Day (NHTD), which reminds all Americans that HIV testing is an important step in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed more than 35 million lives so far.

An estimated 40,000 Americans each year are newly infected with HIV. New CDC data indicates that there are over 1.2 million Americans living with HIV. Routine HIV testing is now recommended for all people ages 15-65, yet 13% of those infected with HIV don’t know it, and many people with HIV are still diagnosed late in their illness.

In Collier County alone, we have over 1,700 reported cases of HIV/AIDS; our number of new cases for the past 5 years has been an average of 50 a year. Whether we realize it or not, HIV/AIDS is in our neighborhoods, and it affects all of us here in Collier County.
