NATIONAL BLACK HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY

By Arielle Myers

February 05, 2019

I Am My Brother’s and Sister’s Keeper

Naples, Fla. —  February 7th is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). This day is observed each year to increase education, testing, community involvement, and treatment among black communities. The Florida Department of Health in Collier County (DOH-Collier) is responding to the impact of HIV in our Black community by offering free, rapid HIV testing events in February with same day results. DOH-Collier encourages everyone to get tested at least once a year for HIV.

Blacks/African Americans continue to have the highest number of HIV infections compared to other races and ethnicities. In Florida during 2016, African Americans accounted for 42% of new HIV diagnoses while only representing about 15% of the population. In Collier County, over 35% of men, women, and children who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS are Black.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a nationwide mobilization effort designed to encourage Black Americans across the US to get educated, get tested, get treated, and get involved with HIV/AIDS, as it continues to devastate Black communities.
