Summer Campers Fight Crime in the Tobacco Free Art Contest

By Adriana Mazzarese

August 09, 2019

Naples, FL -The Tobacco Free Collier Partnership would like to congratulate Zaddy Hernandez of Camp Mackle and Dante Holts of Golden Gate Community Center, this year’s winners of the 2019 Tobacco Free Summer Art Contest! This contest gave campers an opportunity to bring forth their artistic skills in a way that displays the harmful effects associated with tobacco use on famous cartoons as well as why their favorite cartoons do not use tobacco products.

This year’s topic was “Famous cartoons fighting against the E-epidemic” a topic both K-5 and 6-8 graders can relate to. The E-epidemic is the dramatic increase of youth vaping across the country, including Florida. Teens are vaping at much higher rates compared to adults. To help the participants better understand the topic, Tobacco Free Collier staff visited each participating summer camp to give a presentation covering the various ways tobacco can affect their lives and how they could portray these affects in a creative and unique art piece relating to the topic.

Now in its fifth year, a total of 9 summer camps around Collier County participated, resulting in over 115 entries! The art contest represents a fun opportunity for local kids to show off their creative side while supporting a worthy cause. A variety of the art work submitted by the participants will be displayed at the South Collier Regional Library, and Immokalee Library throughout the months of August and September.

If you have any questions or would be interested in participating in the Tobacco Free Art Contest next summer, please contact The Tobacco Free Collier Partnership at 239-252-6852.
