National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
Naples, Fla. – The Department of Health in Collier County (DOH-Collier) is joining the national effort to educate women and girls about the risks of HIV and how to protect their health with free screening events throughout Collier County. National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) is observed on March 10th each year, and is an annual, nationwide observance that sheds light on the impact of HIV and AIDS on women and girls.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four people living with HIV in the United States is a woman 13 or older. In 2014, HIV was the 5th leading cause of death among women between the ages of 25-44. In Florida, HIV infection among adult women (ages 13+) accounted for only 11% of reported cases in 1987. That figure rose to 29% in 2005, but then decreased, down to 20% in 2014.
By the end of 2015, in Collier County alone, there were 1,704 reported cases of HIV infection. Women accounted for 469 (28%) of these cases within Collier County.
For this reason, DOH-Collier and its community partners are proud to sponsor the following events celebrating National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day:
